TUI: Texting Under the Influence

By Virilitas | December 24, 2008

TUI

At the inception of the true Christmas season, with many more parties to come, most of us keep in mind the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol— serious dangers to life and property. But how much thought do we give to TUI (texting under the influence), which can be a danger to relationships and reputations? Let’s look at three categories of “drunk texting,” and some classic examples.

Revealing the truth imprudently:

About oneself:

Want u 2 meet my parents. Come 2 state prisn.

About one’s feelings:

I love u!

About others:

No, she’s at AA right now.

Exaggerating the truth:

About oneself:

YES!!! I PWN beer pong!

About one’s feelings:

I luv you!!!

About others:

u stink, Jen. why do u alwayz smell like a dude??

Disregarding the truth:

About oneself:

UR fluent in Porchugeez? Me 2!

About others:

My buddy, Mark, is a perfect match 4 u.

TUI isn’t necessarily limited to messages sent via cell phones; it also includes e-mail messages and blog comments (or blog posts!) made with impaired judgment. Nevertheless, whatever form it takes, texting under the influence can embarrass people and cause unnecessary problems. So the next time you’re out partying, pick a DT (designated texter) or give up your phone and blackberry; just don’t get a TUI!

These examples are hilarious. I’m afraid I’ve definitely received a few TUIs in my day.

Ah thank you for reading, Good Sir, and what is more, thank you for commenting! I’m afraid I’ve been on both the sending and receiving ends of TUI messages– so I suppose it isn’t always better to give than to receive. ;D
